Peri-Areolar Scars for Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation scars tend to improve over time. At six months the scars tend to soften. In general, the periareolar scar is kept within the areolar skin which heals well.

There are four primary access points for breast augmentation. The areola, the infra-mammary crease, the axillae, and the umbilicus (belly button).

At six months the areola scars begin to soften and continue to soften for 12 to 18 months post-surgery.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a common procedure among fitness models and athletes.  Breast augmentation can help maintain the breast volume while the remaining body parts are becoming lean. It is very common for fitness models to lose breast volume while undergoing training.

Silicone implants for breast augmentation can be placed through several incisions. The implants can be placed through the axilla (transaxillary), periareolar, or inframammary. In patients who have a defined breast crease, the inframammary incision is acceptable. In patients with relatively symmetric breasts, then transaxillary is appropriate. Periareolar tends to be the more common method of silicone breast augmentation in our practice followed by transaxillary.

Breast Augmentation for Breast Asymmetry

Breast augmentation is a procedure that can often help correct breast asymmetry. Breast volume discrepancy is common. When choosing to place implants, an occasional difference of 25 to 50 cc can improve the overall appearance of the breasts as well as make then appear more similar.

When determining implant volumes and sizes, it is best to measure the base width of the breast to determine the implant ranges. Once the base width is determined, the profile of implant ranging from (moderate, moderate plus, or high) or (style 10, style 15, or style 20) can be selected.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation procedures are common procedures performed in our office. Typically patients come to our office in the spring so that they can be ready for swimwear in summer.

Selection of implant volume is normally determined by two factors. The first factor is how broad the base of the breast is. The second factor depends on the laxity of the breast tissue skin envelope. Many different breast volumes can accommodate various implant sizes.

Recovery from breast augmentation is variable. If patients can refrain from going to the gym for 4 weeks following surgery, that is best. Alternatively patients can rest for two weeks and then may resume light exercise such as stationary bicycle at two weeks after the procedure.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation procedures are common procedures in the spring and summer months. Patients typically come to the office during the spring season so that they are "ready to go" to the beach or summer events. Healing from breast augmentation surgery takes several months. The position of the breast implant settles significantly over six months to one year. Patients begin to look good at around four to six weeks post-operatively. Patients tend to get the best results, if they can limit their amount of physical exercise during the four to six weeks that they are healing.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentations with silicone gel mammary prosthesis are frequently performed in the winter months over the holidays. Patients frequently choose to recover from surgery when they have time off from work or from school.

I typically tell patients to rest for 4-6 weeks before resuming strenuous physical activity or contact sports. Having this time coincide with the holiday season is always helpful for recovery.

Breast Augmentation for Tuberous Breast Deformity

Breast augmentation is an excellent option for the correction of a tuberous breast deformity. Tuberous breast deformity is usually classified as having the following characteristics:

1.       A widened, enlarged, puffy areola

2.       Widely spaced breasts

3.       Minimal breast tissue

4.       A high inframammary fold

5.       A narrow breast base

Silicone gel mammary prosthesis are very helpful for correcting the volume associated with tuberous breasts, narrowing the width between the breasts, increasing the breast bases, and in lowering the inframammary fold.
